Terms of use

1. Scope and minimum age

These terms apply to the use of the LightOtter app and services, provided by Kristan Dietrich, Enzianstr. 3, 86343 Königsbrunn, Deutschland.

Consumers only: this offer is aimed exclusively at consumers within the meaning of § 13 of the German Civil Code (BGB). Use for commercial purposes is not permitted.

Minimum age: LightOtter is intended only for people who are at least 16 years old. By using the app, and at the latest by creating an account, you confirm that you are 16 or older. Accounts of people under 16 are deleted without delay once we become aware of them.

2. Free use

The core features of LightOtter are free and work without an account. LightOtter is not medical advice and not a medical device; the minutes are a rule of thumb.

3. Premium

Premium is available as a monthly subscription for 5.99 € per month, as an annual pass for a one-time 39.99 € or as a lifetime purchase for a one-time 99.99 €. These are final prices: for web purchases we charge no VAT under § 19 UStG (German small business rule); in the apps, the price shown by the store includes the VAT that Apple or Google pays.

Monthly subscription: it comes with a one-time 7-day free trial; after that the monthly price is charged unless you cancel before. The subscription renews for one month at a time and can be cancelled at any time to the end of the current month, in your App Store or Google Play account.

Annual pass: you pay for the annual pass once. It unlocks Premium for one year from the purchase and then ends automatically; it does not renew and you do not need to cancel it. If you buy another annual pass while one is running, the new year starts when the current one ends. After that you keep Premium only if you buy again.

Founder pass: confirmed waitlist members can buy one founder pass per email address during the offer period (only once, even after deleting the account and signing up again): an annual pass at the founder price of a one-time 24.99 € (regular price 39.99 €). Like the annual pass, it runs for one year from the purchase and does not renew. It is only offered in the iOS and Android apps when you are signed in there with the same email address you used for the waitlist.

Lifetime: a lifetime purchase gives you an unlimited, non-transferable licence to use all Premium features for as long as we offer the service (the lifetime of the app). We guarantee that the server services will run for at least 24 months from your purchase. If we discontinue LightOtter or the server services, we will announce this at least 3 months in advance. In that case you keep the purely local offline features of the most recently published app version.

4. Contract and payment

In the iOS and Android apps you buy Premium through Apple’s App Store or Google Play. The terms of that store apply in addition; payment, renewal and refunds run through Apple or Google, and the store shows prices in your local currency. A store subscription you cancel in your App Store or Google Play account.

5. Right of withdrawal

You have the right to withdraw from this contract within fourteen days without giving any reason. The period starts when the contract is concluded. To withdraw, send us a clear statement by email to hello@lightotter.com. Whether and when the right of withdrawal ends early is governed by the statutory rules (§ 356(5) and (6) BGB). For purchases in the iOS and Android apps, Apple or Google handle payment and refunds; you can still declare your withdrawal to us as well.

The withdrawal information with the model withdrawal form is at lightotter.com/withdrawal/.

6. Liability

We are liable without limitation for intent and gross negligence and for injury to life, body or health. If we slightly negligently breach a duty whose fulfilment makes the proper performance of the contract possible in the first place and on whose observance you may regularly rely (essential contractual duty), we are only liable for the damage that is typical for the contract and foreseeable. Liability under the German Product Liability Act (Produkthaftungsgesetz) remains unaffected. Nothing in these terms excludes or limits any rights you have under mandatory consumer law of your country, for example the consumer guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law or your statutory rights under the UK Consumer Rights Act 2015; the limitation above applies only to the extent permitted by that law.

7. Updates

We provide updates to the app, including security updates, that are needed to keep LightOtter in conformity with the contract: for the monthly subscription while it runs, for the annual pass for its term and for Lifetime for the period you can reasonably expect given its nature and purpose (§ 327f BGB). If you do not install an update that we provided together with information about the consequences, we are not liable for a defect that results solely from that.

8. Ollie’s Raft and rewards

If you accept an invite, you get 20 sun coins and the Friendship Shell; with a confirmed email address you also get 1 free month of Premium (once per address, only through your first invite). If you invite, you get 1 free month once a friend you invited has had sessions on 3 days, the captain’s hat at 3 and 3 free months at 5 active invited friends (active: sessions on 3 days in the last 14). At most 12 free months in 365 days. Sun coins and free months cannot be paid out or transferred. Free months exist only in the web app. There are no free months in the iOS and Android apps. There is no right to rewards being offered permanently; rewards already credited stay.

9. Display names on Ollie’s Raft

On Ollie’s Raft your friends see the name you give yourself. Names are not allowed if they insult, threaten or demean others, break the law (for example banned symbols or incitement to hatred), infringe the rights of others (for example another person’s name or someone else’s trademark) or contain advertising. Before you choose your first name, you confirm these rules in the app.

How we handle this: a short word list rejects gross insults as you type; that is the only automatic check. Anyone can report a name in the app with “Report this name” or by email to hello@lightotter.com. Every report is reviewed by a person. If a name is not allowed, we hide it from all friends; it stays visible on the person’s own device. We tell the reporter and the person concerned what we decided, each time with our reasons, where we know their email address (for reports from the app, through an account with an email address). We decide carefully, objectively and proportionately.

In the case of serious or repeated unlawful violations, we reserve the right to suspend your account temporarily or permanently for good cause (§ 314 BGB). A permanent suspension is usually preceded by a warning, unless we cannot reasonably be expected to continue the contract.

If you disagree with a decision, write to us at hello@lightotter.com and we will review it again. You can always go to court.

10. Final provisions

German law applies. Mandatory consumer protection rules of your country of residence remain unaffected. Version: 14 October 2026.
