Morning daylight by city and month

When does the sun rise, how high is it at 8:00, and how many minutes outside does the LightOtter rule of thumb suggest then? One table per city, for the 15th of every month.

The short answer

In London the sun rises around 8:00 in mid-December and before 4:45 in mid-June, so at 8:00 it is still dark in December and January. In New York it rises around 7:15 in December and 5:25 in June, so 8:00 is light all year. From May to July the sun stands about 25 degrees high at 8:00 in both cities, and the rule of thumb is about 10 minutes on a clear morning. Overcast mornings need about 24 to 29 minutes. On days with less than about 9.5 hours of daylight the app switches to its winter rule of about 25 minutes. These are rule-of-thumb values, not measurements.

How the table is calculated

Sunrise, day length and sun height come from the same astronomical calculation as the LightOtter app (sun position after SunCalc), for the 15th of each month in local time, including daylight saving time.

The minutes use the app’s rule of thumb for going out at 8:00 local time: a base from the sky (10 minutes when clear, about 24 when overcast) times a factor for the sun height at that time. A low sun adds a little; a high sun takes a little off. The range is 6 to 30 minutes.

On days with less than about 9.5 hours of daylight, and in dark months when the sun rises more than an hour after you get up, the app switches to a winter rule of about 25 minutes once it is light. The table marks those months for a wake-up time of 7:00, which is why the minutes can jump between neighboring months.

There is no weather data in this table. Your real morning depends on clouds, shade and when you go out.

How to read it

The minutes are a rule of thumb, not a measurement and not medical advice. Never look directly at the sun.

Going out later than 8:00 usually means a higher sun and the same or slightly fewer minutes. If it is still dark at 8:00, go out as soon as it gets light.
